Welcome back for another Saturday Special feature after such a long time. I’m so proud and honored to introduce you to the one and only Ms. Alexis Badenhop Valenzona!
How are your weekends going so far? Lots of rain lately, noh? I hope you’re all keeping safe and warm from this lame ass weather we’ve been having here in Manila. It gets annoying when it rains whenever I want to go out. I also hate how humid it’s been lately. =.=
This special lady, my beloved readers, is a very very verrrryyyy awesome friend of mine. If you’ve read my very first blog post, then you’ll know that she was one of the few people that has inspired me to develop an official blog. 🙂 She’s also my main defense against writer’s block. Like.. whenever I feel unproductive and lazy, I usually creep on her blog to get me some inspiration to have my creative juices flowing. It always works 🙂 Other than that, she’s this incredibly amazing person and I just can’t keep my excitement on any longer. I want you guys to read on to find out just how awesome Alexis is. I’ll link you guys to her blog at the end of this post so make sure you read everything, mkay?
So yeah, this Saturday Special about Alexis was done like an interview. It’s going to be awesome. I hope you guys enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. 😀 Let’s begin!
Tell us 3 random things about yourself.
“- I seriously want to have teal-colored hair but my career choice is the one that’s highly preventing me from having it because I would look like a tattoo artist rather than a dentist.
– If I could steal someone’s singing voice, I would steal Florence Welch’s of Florence and The Machines.
– In an alternate universe, I wanna be a rapper.”
What or who most inspires you?
“I never really thought much about this since my college entrance exam essay haha. Nothing specific though. I just get really inspired by people who are so driven to study. I mean, genuinely love studying and could actually say that it’s their passion to learn and absorb knowledge. They make me want to try harder in life.”
Describe a perfect day.
“A perfect day for me should consist of good food, good music, and good people. I imagine a day of just being with my friends, celebrating art and culture by visiting different independent stores of knick knacks and then swinging by a vinyl store and just have enriching conversations about our favorite artists or types of music. And then stopping by a nice place with good food.”
Alexis, just like my awesome boyfriend, is taking up Dentistry. She’s already on her 3rd year of Dentistry Proper which means she only has two more years out of six to go. 😀
Describe a typical day in your life.“- A typical day in my life means that I have to go to school and it’s not really that special, so:
– I wake up at around 5:30am, get ready for school and I’m ready to leave by 6:20am. I get to school at 7am or earlier and go through a day’s worth of fascinating lectures and activities about teeth. I get home at around 6pm, get my reviewers ready, study half of my reviewer, take a shower, and then fall asleep. I would wake up at around 8:30pm for dinner, and then proceed to study again until who knows what time as long as I can say everything written in my reviewer without actually reading it. That’s exactly how my week is composed of.”
What is your personal mantra?
“- This actually came from my best friend and he invented this acronym TIWI which stands for, “Take in what’s important.” It basically means that you only pay attention to things that are worthy of your time and just shun all the negativity away.
– Another one is something which is from him too and he tells me this every time I have to study: “Pakainin mo ng knowledge!” It’s so funny but so powerful at the same time haha.”
Oh, by the way, not only is Alexis taking up Dentistry, she’s owning it. She’s one of the smartest in her batch. Yeah, that’s right. Batch. Not just her class, I said batch. Beauty, Awesomeness AND brains. Didn’t I tell you she’s pretty amazing?
How’s Dentistry going for you lately? “Dentistry is my life now and I quite like it. I would be lying if I said that it’s going easy for me because it’s not. I just make sure that I do things to make it easier for me to go through this mind-taxing course I’m in. I’ve been gradually learning my strengths and weaknesses and that actually helps me survive. Being the president of my class helped me in being a lot more organized too. I’m going to be in my 5th year (out of 6) this June, which means that I’m officially a clinician. I’m both excited and extremely nervous for what’s ahead of me since I am a very awkward person and this year, we will be dealing with a lot of patients. Hopefully, I would be able to gradually overcome my gawkiness and develop my people skills this year.”
Tell us of your studying techniques. “Reviewers. They are the key to success. I’m a very OC person when it comes to reviewers. They all have to be typewritten and formatted uniformly or else I would get really distracted by the imperfection of it all. Immediately after coming from school, I pull out all my handwritten notes and start typing them on my laptop and ready for printing not long after. The way I study is probably not the most efficient way to do if you’re pressed for time because I like to memorize everything. Most of our quizzes at school are essay types so actually knowing everything about the lesson really helps me to correctly justify my answers. I tend to absorb everything easily when I’m saying them loudly and then writing them down again silently. I do this for every page of my reviewer and then repeat around 3-4 times depending on how much time I have. On average, it takes me about 2-3 hours (w/o breaks) to memorize a 5-page reviewer.
What are your future plans after the Dentistry boards?“I want to pursue further studies in surgery before I go abroad and study at my dream school (National University of Singapore) where I would like to pursue graduate studies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I was thinking of going to PGH since I heard that they have a very good dental surgery program. It would be ideal if I could juggle that with working in a clinic since in order to study at NUS, I need to have 2 years of clinical experience (excluding the internship).”
You have the cutest school materials I’ve ever seen, how do you shop for them?
“I never really thought that my school materials were cute. I just like getting the ones that are enough to make me feel happy about studying but not too distracting to make my mind wander off. MUJI is my best friend.”
If you’ve seen her blog, you’ll see that she has a lot of extremely cute stuff. I’m always amused by them. 🙂
You have a spectacular collection of cameras, which is your favorite & why? “I have collected lots of film cameras but decided to give some away because I have no use of them (they were mostly modern ones and photo quality matched that of cameras nowadays anyway). My favorite is my dad’s old SLR that he passed on to me. It’s around 30+ years old and he got it when he was still travelling a lot. He was pretty serious with photography too and not only gave me this camera, but also gave me his entire loot of gorgeous lenses. It could be a family heirloom!”
Two years ago, Paolo and I gave Alexis that camera between the Fuji Instax Mini 7S and the vintage Canon SLR for Christmas because we love her to bits. You can even read about it on my old blog post, here. 🙂
Other than cameras, what else do you like to collect?
“I collect books! I am a firm advocate of the printed word and I really don’t mind how expensive it is to be constantly buying actual books because I’m trying to have enough (which will never happen because you can never have enough books!) for a wall full of books. Personal dream!”
I see that you’ve just travelled with your family lately, what are your 5 essential travel items?“1. My iPod. Nothing’s more elating than a designated anthem for your adventures.
2. A hoodie. I have an issue with my skin touching the plane’s seat. I don’t like that feeling knowing that thousands of random people have sat on my seat.
3-4. Pen and paper. I like to write down places I’ve visited and plan to visit so I could blog about it after.
5. And my camera, obviously. There is no way I’m gonna travel without some form of photography device with me.”
What’s on your wish list at the moment?
“I’m eyeing the Sony Nex-7 at the moment. I think it’s a good balance between a DSLR and a point-and-shoot for people like me who enjoy constantly taking photos of random life events. On my wish list is also a Crosley turntable in aqua blue so I could start my own vinyl collection. I also desperately want a ticket to London so I can go to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour of Harry Potter. I would just cry in the middle of Diagon Alley if that came true haha.”
You have an amazing blog, what’s it about?
“My blog is my public diary. I don’t have a certain theme going on there. I basically blog about anything that I want to blog. A common post you’d see on it are about food or books though.”
When and how did you get into blogging?
“I actually started blogging when I was 13 with Livejournal as my platform. My posts were purely text and no photos. My friend, who had her own blog too, mainly influenced me. Livejournal was the platform I used for writing fiction too at an early age with themes mostly about Japanese culture. I started writing just for fun and I didn’t and still don’t do it for the fame or the attention. I don’t care if no one reads my blog. It doesn’t matter if I get one reader or none, because I just really like writing about my life and documenting it with photographs. Nonetheless, I’m very thankful for the occasional messages I get from a few of my readers saying how they enjoy this post or that post.”
Any famous blogger friends?
“I can’t really think of any famous blogger friends that I have other than Tricia Gosingtian, whom I’ve met 4 years ago because I bought her wig haha. What was supposed to be just a normal business transaction turned out to be a very chill but fun afternoon of talking about life, our fandoms and just random stuff. You’d be surprised at how very down-to-earth she really is in real life. I’m also happy that the main organization that has inspired me to become a dentist, Operation Smile, has inspired her too.”
It’s pretty obvious from your blog that you love to read. What are you currently reading, and what book do you recommend?
“I’m currently reading Legend by Marie Lu. I’m also going through my A Song of Ice and Fire series (the series where Game of Thrones is based on AND I’M ADDICTED TO IT. SERIOUSLY). People who are fans of the TV series should get into the books too to fully understand and immerse yourself in the story. George R.R. Martin is a freaking genius. Besides that, I recommend reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I read it this year and it remains as my favorite book that I read in 2013. If you’re into YA fiction, the Divergent series is excellent! The 3rd and final installment comes out this fall! And of course, I recommend any Murakami books. It’s a pretty biased recommendation because Haruki Murakami is my favorite author. He’s another literary genius!”
I also see that you love to document your food trips, describe a perfect meal.
“I don’t really think about a perfect meal too much. But my favorite is Japanese food. I could eat Japanese food forever and not get tired of it. 2nd favorite is Thai food. Thinking about it now though, I’d say a perfect meal is a meal cooked by my late grandma.”
I absolutely love your bedroom, but I’ve only seen sneak peeks of it every now and then. Do you mind showing us just how amazing your room is?
“My bedroom is my headquarters and it’s where all the ideas flow. They say that the color orange stimulates a person’s sense of creativity, and I think my walls have done that job pretty well. There are 3 parts in my room: bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom. I left out the dressing room and bathroom as it is too personal to broadcast in the interwebz.”
Moving on to her creative music siiiiide~ Alexis has really awesome taste in music. That’s like one of the first reasons why she became close with my boyfriend which resulted to me and her being super awesome chicas. ❤ Classic. Awesome classic music. Just the way we like it 😛
Aside from being awesomely creative, she’s also awesomely fashionable. From her lookbook account, you can see that she has a very laid back yet very chic sense of style. I absolutely love it!
Mkay, let’s talk about fashion. Describe your style in 5 words.
“Inspired by lots of things.” I know that’s kind of cheating, but that’s really how I dress up. I get ideas from different places and incorporate them in my wardrobe. Japanese magazines are my best friends when it comes to fashion.
What is the one essential item in your wardrobe you couldn’t live without?
“My combat boots. They just spice up every outfit I have! I don’t even mind wearing them with a floral dress.”
What’s in your regular day bag?
“I carry too much things inside my purse but the consistent ones you’ll see are: – my phone, iPod and earphones, wallet, facial wipes and tissue, a book, pen & paper, hand sanitizer, and my signature vanilla scent from Bath & Body Works.”
If you had to choose one outfit to wear every day, what would it look like?
“I would most definitely wear my authentic Game of Thrones tee with the Targaryen sigil print. I’m not a huge fan of House Targaryen because most of their ancestors were serious nut jobs, in my opinion, but man, Daenerys is my girl and she’s the sole reason why I’m proud to wear the sigil. Come on, how can you not love the dragons?”
What would you wear on a first date?
“I’ll wear anything appropriate for the setting. Nothing special because I hate overdressing, and I’m pretty sure guys hate it too. One thing’s for sure though, I’m not wearing heels. I really don’t like wearing heels as I don’t see the need for me to do so. But if I absolutely must, I would go for wedges.”
We’re down to my last question…
Girl like you is rare to come by, “who”/what is your ideal man?
“I’m gonna go real superficial and cheesy with this one haha:
1) One who looks like Alden Ehrenreich or Finn Harries.
2) Loves to listen to the same indie music that I listen to.
3) Knows that the way to my heart consists of cinnamon churros, thai iced tea, and chicken gyros from Café Med.
4) Enjoys reading some Palahniuk, Murakami, and Vonnegut but is also not too shy to admit that he has read some John Green out of curiosity.
5) Is passionate about his career.
6) A homebody like me who would choose a night of Game of Thrones or Dr. Who marathon over a night out of partying and drinking which reminds me:
7) Must be able to carry a long, fun, and meaningful conversation with me about Game of Thrones. I mean really go deep into theories and histories and whatnot. It’s such a happy scene when a couple can throw different inside jokes that were influenced by their fandom. It strengthens their bond even more.”
